Coal exploration involves several stages including:
- ground reconnaissance and outcrop mapping and sampling
- seismic surveys
- exploration drilling
- open-hole drilling for geophysical logging
- coring
- delineation drilling
- bulk sampling
Where is coal found?
In Canada, coal is widespread. Anthracite coal is found in the mountain areas of British Columbia; bituminous coal is found in British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia; sub-bituminous is found in Alberta and lignite deposits occur in Saskatchewan.
Canada’s coal reserves comprise 3,471 million tonnes of anthracite and bituminous coal, and 3,107 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal and lignite.
