DOSSIER: HydroBOT

I’m super dependable. It’s true. But I’m also a bit of a risk-taker, but that’s only because I’m generally so reliable. Hydropower provides most of the country’s electricity, it’s constantly at work and it’s also emission-free. If you were that trustworthy, you might make the occasional base jump yourself.

Heating

I’m not necessarily as warm and cuddly as GasBOT, but once you plug me into a space heater, things can get mighty toasty. In fact, electricity is responsible for a quarter of all residential heating in Canada.

Transportation

I don’t have a lot to do with transportation directly, unless you’re counting boats. But I am connected to Canada’s transportation is when it comes to electric vehicles.

Electricity

Don’t let those innocent optical sensors fool you – I am an electric dynamo. In fact, most of Canada’s electricity comes from hydro power. Take a bow, HydroBOT. Not off the dam, though.

How much?

If there’s one thing Canada doesn’t have a shortage of, it’s water. In fact Canada is the third largest producer of hydroelectricity in the world.

Where?

I work all across the country, in every province and just about every territory. The provinces that produce the most hydro power, though, are Quebec, BC, Newfoundland and Labrador and Manitoba.

How does it work?

Like all plants that use turbines to generate electricity, hydro plants just need to get their turbines turning. There are two kinds of hydro projects found throughout the country.

Knowing where water will be is one of my most important skills which is why I always keep my optical sensors open.

Global intelligence

HydroBOT’s popular, both in Canada and around the world, as the superpower source of renewable electricity everywhere. Yes sir, there are big fish in that particular pond, like the Three Gorges Dam in China: the world’s largest hydroelectric facility.
