In the good old days of manual typewriters, pencils and paper, lighting was the second largest energy consumer in the Commercial and Institutional sector behind space heating. Now however, electrical equipment – computers, printers, photocopiers, cappuccino machines – is essential to the efficiency of a well-run commercial enterprise. And electrical gadgetry consumes 14 per cent of the energy used in the Commercial and Institutional sector compared to 10.5 per cent for lighting.
