Land use and wildlife diversity
Most biomass used for power production in Canada comes from wastes from mills, agriculture, forests and urban uses, helping to decrease the waste volumes sent to landfills.
By planting biomass crops such as grasses and trees, it is also possible to increase soil quality and reduce erosion. Some forms of biomass cultivation (such as the growing of native plants and trees) can create better wildlife habitat than conventional food crops. Some environmentalists, however, oppose the development of large-scale energy crops, saying this activity could lead to increases in pesticide and fertilizer use that are harmful to wildlife and wildlife habitat.
