Emerging technologies and generation
The rising price of energy and the increased societal demands for environmental friendly power has led to increased investment in alternative energy sources. Several new generation technologies are emerging to provide electrical generation for commercial and residential purposes. Two promising new technologies are the following:
- wind power
- solar or photovoltaic power
Their small size, location flexibility and low environmental impacts add to their appeal.
Large scale generation usually takes place far from our cities, where most of the electricity is consumed. Some of the new sources bring electricity generation closer to the user. They are often called distributed generation.
They are also called small power, because they generally produce less then 50 megawatts. Their limited capacity and small size make them ideal for individual, site-specific operations.
