Safety and maintenance of transmission systems

Power companies follow rigorous maintenance programs, based on regular inspections and technological improvements, to make sure that facilities meet high standards for safety and system integrity.

Workers may use helicopters, carry out foot patrols or climb the structures to visually inspect transmission lines, equipment and right-of-way corridors for defects that could cause possible equipment failure. Sophisticated technical equipment is used to inspect and maintain substation equipment such as breakers, transformers and communication systems. Power companies also use a variety of methods such as mowing, hand cutting, trimming and herbicides to control the growth of vegetation along the rights-of-way.
