Spill prevention

Protecting land and groundwater is a priority for the downstream petroleum industry. Companies understand that to protect land, they must focus attention on reducing the impact and occurrence of accidental spills by maintaining equipment in peak condition and disposing of waste products carefully.

In 2003, accidental spills reported by CPPI member companies accounted for 713,000 litres, down from 2.6 million litres in 1996. Thirteen of the spills were over 10,000 litres.
