Marine spills

Downstream petroleum companies transport about half of all petroleum-based products shipped on Canadian waters.

To protect these waters, CPPI members support marine response plans that provide 24-hour-a-day emergency response service across the country, 365 days a year. State-of-the-art equipment at the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation and the Eastern Canada Response Corporation help to prevent or reduce the impact of marine spills.

Very few marine spills occur from the downstream petroleum industry. In 2003, member companies of the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute reported two spills to water greater than 200 litres for a total volume of about 500 litres.
