Pipeline integrity

Over the years, pipelines have proven to be a safe and efficient way to transport oil and gas products. Still, pipeline failures or ruptures are an inherent risk of operations that can result in environmental damage or personal injury.

To manage this risk, pipeline companies focus on maintaining pipeline integrity throughout their transportation systems. This helps to ensure the pipeline networks have the strength and operating fitness to do the job safely and reliably. Pipeline integrity programs involve a comprehensive set of tools, technologies and strategies, including:

  • cathodic protection to prevent pipeline corrosion
  • computerized systems to continually monitor pipeline operations
  • frequent aerial surveillance of pipeline rights-of-way
  • in-line inspection tools to detect changes in the condition of the pipeline
  • on-going visual inspection and repair programs

One common cause of leaks and ruptures is damage caused by unauthorized third-party agriculture or construction activity near pipelines. Companies mark pipeline routes clearly and participate in various “call before you dig” programs to reduce this hazard. Communication programs are designed to keep property owners along the pipeline rights-of-way informed about operations and to enlist their help in preventing pipeline damage and detecting pipeline spills, should they occur.
