Many properties on which coal mines and thermal power plants are located provide habitats for birds, animals, fish and plant life.

Direct impacts occur when surface mining operations disrupt the habitat of species. Before constructing mines, companies, working with government officials, landowners and other stakeholders, carry out environmental assessments to identify the species and habitats needing protection.
