Noise levels

Wind turbines, particularly older designs, emit noise that can be heard near wind farms. According to the U.S. Renewable Energy Policy Project, the noise from a typical wind farm at 350 metres can vary between 35 and 45 decibels. Sound levels can grow with increases in wind speeds, and are objectionable to some people.

To minimize noise levels, operators are using improved rotor technology, siting plants away from densely populated areas and including sound-absorbing materials in the generator. The frequency and volume of this noise can be controlled, but not eliminated by wind turbine design.
